| Extracurricular Activities | Colleges are most interested in students who do interesting things, stick with them, and rise to positions of leadership in them. It is obvious that colleges and universities give a preference to those students who are able to do college-level work and are interesting and useful for the college life. That is why our extracurricular activities can play a big part in distinguishing you from other applicants and determining your chances for admission.
The range of extracurricular activity offerings varies extensively, depending upon the size and type of college or university. Extracurricular activities range from primarily social organizations to governance organizations to intercollegiate athletic programs. Every activity gives students an opportunity to work with others and to gain vital life skills.
A number of students think that the way to impress an admissions officer is signing up for every activity their school proposes. In reality colleges are not impressed by students with a variety of dissimilar activities. It is better to be involved in activities that you take pleasure in and that you are good at.
College admission committee is most interested in activities that demonstrate you have the respect of your peers. You should be careful about putting too much stress on activities that do not bring you into contact with other people for example hiking or writing poetry. Things that demonstrate your ability to be a leader and get along with groups of people are always valued.
Colleges also look for the involvement in activities that reinforce academic or other goals that you mention in your application. You will be asked about non-academic activities, including clubs, sports, community service and jobs.
So grades and outside activities certainly make a difference in whether you get accepted to a particular college or university.
